How to Report a Scammer

If you experienced being scammed online, there are a number of ways that you can take action. While we here at OLX are doing our best to make every experience a win-win exchange, OLX merely acts as a platform where sellers and buyers meet and is therefore not liable in such cases. These cases should be brought directly to the PNP. Rest assured, OLX will be there to help along the way. We’re here to guide you on what to do when you got scammed.

There are still steps you can take when you’ve experienced being scammed. Here are some of the things you have to remember, and what you need in order to file a formal complaint:

STEP 1: REPORT THE USER TO OLX.

Once you’ve experienced scamming, immediately report the user by contacting us via our website or sending us a message on Facebook. Here are just some of the details that we’ll need:

  • Alleged scammer’s OLX account link, username or mobile number
  • Date of payment (for buyers)
  • Screenshot of your conversation (with visible mobile number) via chat or SMS
  • Image copy of your receipt (for buyers)
  • Additional contact information

We’ll review the case and evidence you’ve sent us. When proven to be a scam, we’ll suspend the fraudster’s OLX account right away. We will also advise you to reach out to the PNP to file a formal complaint. See next steps.

STEP 2: VISIT CAMP CRAME OR DESIGNATED REGIONS WHERE THERE IS A PNP-ANTI-CYBERCRIME GROUP (PNP-ACG).

Your personal appearance is required because the PNP would need your signature for the report. If you’ve emailed the PNP, they will ask you to visit one of their nearest offices to formalize the complaint.

Here are the areas that have PNP-ACG offices:

  • Region I, 3, 4A, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 & 12
  • Camp Crame

For more information, click here for PNP’s office and contact number directory.

Note: Make sure to bring photocopies or printed screenshots of all the evidence you have that will help the investigation.

STEP 3: ONCE IN THE PNP OFFICE, FILL OUT A FORM FOR THE COMPLAINT.
STEP 4: GIVE THE PNP A FORMAL STATEMENT/RECOUNT OF EVENTS.
STEP 5: ATTACH THE EVIDENCE TO THE FORM OF COMPLAINT.

These can be in the form of screenshots of the ad, proof of your conversation with the scammer, and your proof of payment to the scammer.

STEP 6: COORDINATE WITH THE PNP-ACG AS THEY PROCEED WITH THE INVESTIGATION.

OLX is ready to provide data that the PNP needs from us. Once the Prosecutor is able to determine a probable cause, this case will be filed to the court.
